Children and Choking Hazards

Whilst being a young mom, au pair or nanny, it is important that you are able to identify items and objects that have the potential to become serious choking hazards.

As the saying goes, “Kids will be kids” which means that anything they can fit in their mouth, eventually lands up there and, could potentially cause harm and become a choking hazard. Be sure to always keep a firm eye on your child and monitor what they put in their mouths.

A List of choking hazards to lookout for:

  • Chunks of meat or cheese
  • Litchi pips
  • Whole grapes, berries and raisins
  • Hard sugar coated sweets
  • Popcorn
  • Sausages
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Chunks of peanut butter
  • Chewing gum
  • Cereal
  • Marbles
  • Coins
  • Pen caps
  • Small watch or button looking batteries
  • Buttons

It is essential that you or anyone else who is involved in the care of your child is trained in First Aid so that if you are faced with an emergency situation whereby a child is choking, you know exactly what to do.
